Zune, Zune, Zune!!

Zune, Zune, Zune!! Microsoft is finally talking publicly about the new digital music service it plans to build to compete head on with Apple’s iTunes/iPod service. Billboard.biz published an interesting article on this service, and there has been a lot of activity in the blogshere regarding this topic. It’s too early for a confirmed launch timeline for the service but I am hoping this launches in time for the 2006 holiday season (I can hope, cant I). I did come across the Zune logo and an image of a Zune music player on Engadget. I am not too impressed with form factor of this device, it looks way too similar to an iPod. I strongly believe that the image posted on the Engadet is a concept is not what the actual music player will look like. Microsoft will have to do better in terms of design and usability if it wants to compete with Apple.

The Zune ecosystem seems to be quite comprehensive with devices that support audio and video, a music download service that you can purchase songs from and a peer to peer component as well. What interests me the most is the wireless aspect of the Zune service, it seems that people will be able to download music files wirelessly, and even sample music by downloading a clip of music stored on another device that is in the same hotspot. This aspect of the Zune service is a competitive differentiator against Apple’s iPod service and will help Microsoft gain share against Apple. The wireless scenarios that are being included in the Zune ecosystem deliver on Microsoft’s focus on the internet and internet based services. Who knows, Microsoft might announce a Zune Live service shortly?

This is a welcome move into an industry where there has been a virtual monopoly for a long time with Apple’s iPod service. Apple is the clear leader in the US with over 75% market share. Music companies & record labels will now have an option when/if being strong armed by Apple. There is plenty of room in this industry for another player to thrive as data from the Solutions Research group shows that less than 30% of the US population owns a digital music player. I strongly believe that competition is good for the customer and things are about to get interesting. It will be a while before the Zune service will be able to compete in a substantial way with Apple. Apple has done a great job in bringing innovation to the marketplace with its iPod/iTunes service and has worked hard with various partners to build an ecosystem of peripherals that support the iPod. A cool example of this is the factory installed iPod module in your car that integrates with your iPod device instead of the traditional CD player.

Not everyone will be happy with this announcement; I am sure companies likes Creative & iRiver who manufacture MP3 players using Microsoft’s operating system are watching as their partner morphs into a competitor. It will be a delicate balancing act for Microsoft to maintain its partnerships with such companies while launching the Zune service. That being said, its going to be a while until Zune becomes a household word, like iPods.
